The ‘Twangs’ of David

(audio sermon)

The word Psalm comes from a Greek word for the sound made when plucking a harp – that is ‘twang.’ If you ever wondered if music has an important place in Scripture. Look no further, the Psalms are it.

Speakers notes follow –

The Twangs (Psalms) of David

Guitarist goes twang! Psalm – from Psallo (GK – to pluck, twang) – Psalmoi ‘songs sung to harps’

Singing to God often under criticism – church feuds – organ – drums – rock

If challenged on importance of music to God – Psalms – biggest book 150 Chapters (Is 66) – list of songs – Israel’s song book

Music lost – Musician notes: Psalm 56 For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks” – not religious tune?

Instruments Psalm 150 – harp / lyre / pipe (flute) / trumpet / timbrel / cymbals – strings/wind/percussion – modern piano / guitar / bass / sax / drums

– Important church is up to date – out of date is wrong message

Understand a book – authors intentions / circumstances / motives

David as humble shepherd (not king) – alone – audience of one – no stage show, no whistling crowd – foundation – have we lost it?

– problem not instruments – good voices – but heart – about us or Him?

NT song book? Sang Psalms & added new

Col 3.16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

– Psalms / hymns (choruses) / spiritual songs (adlib)

Jesus sang (Mt 26.30) Paul & Silas sang (Ac 16.25)

Restored: Forever, Bless the Lord, May the Words (Ps 19)

David wrote Psalm 27:4 when king ‘One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.’ – why? Like the rooms? Furniture? Theological symbols? This what we often emphasize!

No! ‘Gaze on beauty’ How? Presence – enables perception – feeling / revelation / hearing / vision / understanding / insight / experiential knowledge

– Importance of being in the Spirit – not just having the Spirit in us.

– ‘on in the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit’

Times of Revival, refreshing known for presence – Toronto Blessing – 6 nights a week

Lets look at some Presence Verses:

2 Chronicles 5:13-14 Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God.

– note they sang, made music – the presence filled the temple

– presence stopped normal proceedings – revival times – Biblical

Acts 3:19-20 Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord

– presence refreshes – again and again (times)

Exodus 33.14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

– rest: when God’s in control – where he rules

Psalm 16:11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy
