The Miracle Repair Man

Call the man who deals in love beyond repair. He can heal the world of hearts in need of care. Shine a light ahead when the next step is unclear. Call the man, he’s needed here’ – Celine Dion. We’ll have more from Celine in a moment.

In Psalm 51 David called on God after sinning with Bathsheba – he needed the Miracle Repair Man.

Are you hoping the New Year will be a new beginning? When David said “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me,” he was looking for a new beginning. He had committed adultery with Bathsheba, his sin had come between him and God, and he wanted a fresh start.
Many people are sceptical about new beginnings. They find it hard to believe that an adulterer like David can stop being adulterous, or that a drunkard can stop getting drunk. Their perception is that bad people will always be bad. But David believed he could change, and God believed it too. Did you know that God believes you can change this year? Yes, in fact he believes it so strongly that he sent Jesus to be your change agent. Jesus makes the impossible possible. You can be a new person, you can have a new marriage, you can have a new year; you can even have a new life. But you need the Miracle Repair Man. So why not give him a call?

In Psalm 51 David calls on the Miracle Repair Man saying –

‘Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.
Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Saviour,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.’

Here, David is kneeling before the cross and asking for a fresh start. The cross? Wasn’t that seven hundred years later? Yes, Jesus and the cross were still to come, but that didn’t stop David calling on God as his Saviour and asking him to blot out his sin; and ultimately it is the cross that removes all sin. It doesn’t matter if our faith is anchored in a cross that is future or past; the effect of the cross is the same. So David confesses his sin and asks for a new start; and the future Messiah, the one who repairs hearts and lives, gives him what he is asking for.
Celine Dion sings a song called ‘Call the Man.’ Many of her followers see this song as a gospel song. I am not sure that the writer intended that, but God has a way of inspiring writer’s without them even knowing that he is doing it. And when the words of this song are taken in a spiritual way they have great power. If you have had a bad year and feel lost, abandoned or despondent, I would recommend you listen to this song and then do what Celine says, “Call the Man.” Jesus is the Miracle Repair Man. He deals in love beyond repair, and life beyond repair; he can heal your broken heart and give you a future. Here is Celine’s song. I have put the words below the video so you can follow as she sings.

Call the Man – Celine Dion

Close the door, shut the world away
All the fight’s gone from this wounded heart
Across the floor, dreams and shadows play
Like wind-blown refugees

Call the man who deals in love beyond repair
He can heal the world of hearts in need of care
Shine a light ahead when the next step is unclear
Call the man, He’s needed here

I close my eyes, I remember when
Your sweet love filled this empty room
The tears I cry won’t bring it back again
Unless the lonely star should fall

Call the man who deals in love beyond repair
He can heal the world of hearts in need of care
Shine a light ahead when the next step is unclear
Call the man, He’s needed here

Needed in the chaos and confusion from the plains to city hall
Needed where the proud who walk the wire are set to fall

Call the man who deals in once upon a time
Maybe he can mend this broken heart of mine
Shine a light ahead now the future isn’t clear
Call the man, he’s needed here – Call the man, he’s needed here

Who is the miracle man? Surely it’s Jesus. He alone can heal the world, mend hearts, and shine his light ahead. He alone deals in once-upon-a-time and love-beyond-repair.
Psalm 51 is one of many songs written by David. But he takes a slightly different approach to the writer of Celine’s song. Instead of telling us to call on the miracle man; he models it. This is very helpful, it means we can kneel before the cross and pray the way he prayed. As you hope for a better year ahead, why not call on the Miracle Repair Man as David did, ask him to heal your heart and give you a new start. If like David, you need to be made clean, ask him to turn your dirty linen into white sheets, and your self-created problems into blessings for his kingdom. He can do it, he is the miracle man. All he needs is a willing heart and some co-operation.  And while you are about it, why not tell your friends about the Miracle Repair Man. Many of them are hurting and don’t know which way to turn. Tell them to listen to Celine’s song and to do what she says. May the year ahead be all you hoped for – now call the Man!
