Bible study and Bible devotions are two different things. When we read the Bible devotionally, we read to hear from God personally and be changed. This sermon describes how the written becomes prophetic and personal and how daily reading benefits the devotee.
Speakers notes follow –
Reading the Bible Devotionally
This is not Bible study – not for head knowledge – for spiritual nourishment
Student – Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth ( 2 Ti 2.14).
Devotee – Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. (Ps 1.1-3)
I got excited about Bible from day one – didn’t know much – found it spoke – don’t need to be scholar to benefit – God speaks to you level
For the devotee – Bible is interactive – surfing internet vs reading a book – can’t interact with a book – pages dead – but internet ask question – talks back – click on live links – personal – Bible isn’t alive by digital technology – alive by Holy Spirit
Scholar after objective truth – Devotee after personal word (prophetic) – written gives truth – prophetic gives power – written can become prophetic
Written is for truth – ‘The Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true‘ (Ac 17.11)
Jesus used it for truth. When devil tempted him – quoted the written – saying ‘It is written’
Prophetic is for power – Jesus never used written for power. Relied on Fathers voice for the power – ‘The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does’ (Jn 5. 19).
Wimber in ministry ‘Do what the Father is doing’ – when God makes a verse alive, know there is power! Tap into it!- Reading devotionally for prophetic power – personal connection – a living word
‘My sheep listen to my voice'( Jn 10. 27) ‘Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God’ ( Ro 8.14) ‘Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law’ ( Ps 119. 18)
You’re reading how Jesus healed blind man in John 9. Much truth there – People are not born blind due to parents sin – better to be physically blind than spiritually blind. As you read your mind is drawn to blind man begging at grocery – words ‘this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him’ leap out at you. Whats going on? Prophetic has bounced out of written – empowering you for a miracle. The written can become personally prophetic.
Happened last week – wanted to start BIOY – need to know if it Gods idea – Felt peace –announced it after speaking on Interpreting in Context. The verses I used: Psalm 119.137-144. Day before launching Bl0Y whatsapp, I tried the app reading – started with exact verses. Whats the chances of that? I knew God saying ‘its me’
Few verses – benefits of regular Bible reading:
‘Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers’ (Psalm 1. 1-3)
Not enough to read, must delight – can speed read to say you read it – only if you delight do you take it in – allowing it to nourish, transform
Girl reading under blanket with torch – knew others wouldnt understand her delight – How do you get to delight like that? Its belief – if you really believe its His book you will be in awe – I’m not scolding those who don’t believe enough – I’m just saying delight requires belief – this series designed to bolster your belief
Delight leads to meditating day and night – driven person, motivated – not forcing – loving it
This person like a thriving tree – has all it needs for growth and health – its blessed through being full of Gods ways – which help to avoid the way of sinners
This scripture shows how God’s word makes you flourish inside and overtakes outside – and how it can be a joy doing it, not a chore
Telling the BIOY group it takes 66 days to form a habit. Start out feeling its a chore, but once we sense the nourishment in our bones – encouraged – when experience fulness – excited.
‘Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ’ (Romans 10.17)
When Paul preached this there was no New Testament – did not have faith through written words in mind – It was faith through the gospel preached. But that gospel is now in a book – our faith grows by hearing it read and preached
This scripture shows – more we read the Bible / hear sermons – faith will grow. Good company purifies bad character – whatever view you hear most will influence your beliefs most. Choose what you hear!
Ever listen to a friend then think, oh I know who you’ve been listening too? You can tell by how someone speaks where they hang out – ‘prosperous and blessed’ (word of faith), starsigns – higher self – positive energy (New Age)
‘Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path’ (Psalm 119.105)
Ever feel things dark and confusing – helpless feeling of being alone in a forest and not knowing which path to take – God’s word gives light in two ways – it draws a clear line between wrong ways and right ways (truth) and it delivers a personal word (prophetic)
Perhaps dark because led astray. Got tempted, pregnant, do I keep the baby, how can I not, but I don’t have a job – life seems dark and confusing. We left the light of his word – we need to return.
‘lf you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you’ (John 15.7)
This verse shows how God’s word gives power to your prayer life – only those who have God’s word in them that can ask whatever they wish. Why? Because your will has to align with God’s
Someone wanted prayer to get their permit for another country. I said ill commit it to God as I don’t know his will . Just give it to him so he can do whatever. They said I don’t want whatever, I want the permit. | said that’s not surrender. This life is not about us – about his will
‘Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you’ (Ja 1.21)
Speaks of God’s word in us – speaks to the saved saying it can save you. The message in our hearts can save in all sorts of ways if we follow it. And ultimately it keeps us from losing faith if he practise it.
– are saved, being saved, to be saved
Flourish – Believe – Light in dark – Power in prayer – Overcome Sin
