The Water of Life

(audio sermon)

Jesus said ‘I am the bread of life,’ but speaking to the Samaritan woman he claimed to be the source of the water of life. We need spiritual water as well as spiritual bread.

Speakers notes follow –

The Water of Life

John 4. 4-26

‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry’ (John 6.35)

‘Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst’ (14)

– God through Moses provided bread & water – struck rock

‘Spring of water – welling up to eternal life’ (14)

If you’ve experience it – you know not idle words – My filling/empowering – passing it on – Pentecost filling, laying hands

Israel desert place – complained – Moses cried to God – called to trust God – Five husbands – tough journey – burnt out – dry, thirsty

Jesus sets her up ‘Will you give me a drink?’ (7)

‘You are a Jew – how can you ask?’ (9)

Samaritans – rivals – part Jewish – Torah only – Gerizim temple destroyed – Jacob’s well in their area – put lot of value on it – unclean – cups

Jesus broke tradition – sinners, Romans, women, Samaritans

“lf you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

‘Greater than our father Jacob?’ (12) – as did also his sons – 12 tribes

Jacob’s well watered Israel – God’s people – now Spirit does

Abraham (Father) – Isaac (Son) – Jacob (Spirit)

Isaac gave Jacob – Jesus gives Spirit (Ac 2.33) – the source of spiritual water for God’s people at the source of physical water…!

How do we get it? ‘Gift of God’ (10) – free – by faith – receive

Pentecost gift – told to wait – will receive – power to witness

‘Spring welling up’ (14) – continual flow – but seems to stop!

Dead Sea / Galilee – stagnant – little to no life – give out – worship!

Dry fuel lines – effort to get going – all relationships

Dry? Try worship – ready for next Sunday?

‘This mountain’ (Gerizim) or Jerusalem – controversy of place (20)

“Believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem” (21)

“A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (23-24)

In Spirit – means in intimate relationship – moving with God and by God – prophetic – Pentecost was in Spirit – guided by Spirit

Woman at Cornerstone – moving in front of me – irritated me – she eventually sat – in tears – was in Spirit, experiencing, knowing – I was not!

Bread of life – Water of life – just bread is dry! Can go longer without food than water – need constant filling

Let’s learn to worship in Spirit – enjoy the gift of God
