Significance of God’s Humanity
What if God Was One of Us? (Joan Osborn song) This chapter
Context – Jewish converts under pressure – return to Law of Moses – Muslim to Quran of Muhammad – Rabbi comparing Law with Gospel – Law thru angels – Gospel from carpenter – would Almighty become a man?- Islamic view
Writer (Apollos?) defends Jesus – identity as God-man – Heb 1: Jesus greater than angels – Heb 2: Ssignificance of God becoming man
(2)’Since the message spoken thru angels was binding’ – doesn’t deny importance of the Law -dare we reject the salvation announced by the Lord? (3) – its greater:
(Heb 1.1-4) ‘In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs’
(5)’It is not to angels he has subjected the world (kingdom) to come’ – they had angelitis (obsessed) we need tangable divinity – Muslims struggle not to worship Muhammad
Subject to who? Not angels but – you & me!
(6)Psalm 8. 4-6 ‘What is mankind that you are mindful of them/him?’ – ‘son of man’ – ‘them’ better than ‘him’ – talking of man not Christ – Christ later in 9
(7)’You made them a little lower than the angels – You crowned them with glory & honor’ – put everything under their feet? – Genesis: man over creation – restored
(8)’Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them’ (us)
(9)’But we do see Jesus who was made lower than the angels – now crowned with glory’ – human name – his humanity emphasized – ‘because he suffered death’ – we need to suffer death!
‘Taste death for everyone’ – came to know it – dying is part of this greatness – humility (Islam)
(10)’In bringing many sons & daughters to glory’ – Jesus – pioneer (author) of salvation
‘perfect through what he suffered’ on earth – not imply moral imperfection – means increasingly qualified – a bud perfection diff to flowers perfection (qualification)
(11)’Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers & sisters’ – In Jesus God calls his people brothers & sisters
(12)Psalm 22 again – declared the Fathers name – sang his praises – became what we need to become – he is mankinds mentor
Mourinho – One of Us – someone who stands with us touches us
(14)’Since the children have flesh & blood, he too shared in their humanity’ – flesh so could die – break the power of death
(15)’Free those who – fear death’ – fear of death is bondage
Atheists miserable – some confess it – especially previous Christians – if accident on obscure planet – no ultimate purpose – no hope of another life – affects you in here & now – Christians can face death
(17)Only in Hebrews is High Priest applied to Jesus – fulfilled ceremonies of Day of Atonement – where high priest ministry stands out
(18)Suffered when tempted – not just cross – whole life – temptation more distasteful to him
Because he experienced this he can sympathise and so help us – Who is more helpful – someone who has been through the same or someone who has not? This church doesn’t come to me for marriage councilling
(3.1)’Therefore’ connects to chapter 2 – tells us what to do based on all said
‘Heavenly calling’ – follow the path Christ pioneered – ‘fix your thoughts’ on the pioneer – has won a victory that gives us the faith – has set the example revealing our task
God of love – relationship – closeness – not just greatness as in Islam – we need tangible God – this is in Jesus – you have difficulties – God’s been there/here – God was one of us
