The Parable of the Persistent Widow

Luke 17. 26-3O, 18. I-8

Keep movie illustration in mind – lets go to text

There’s a number of unlocking verses

Context – ‘However, when the Son of man comes will he find faith on the earth?’ (18.8) – connects to – ‘Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man (17.26) ‘It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed‘ (17.30) – End time parable

Main Point (18.1) ‘Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up‘ – (18.8) ‘When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?’- Those who have faith will persist in prayer, those who persist in prayer will have faith

Is He really coming? Its been long. Noah’s day – people about daily things – flood came – Lot’s day same – judgement came – Jesus’ day – Messiah promises – He came = Will again – but will there be faith?

We say we’ll stand, but it gets tough – Some stop – saying ‘Where is God? The evil prosper, Muslims are killing, cancer not cured – Where is God?’

Jesus walked his talk – nights of prayer alone – prayed even at death

(18.1) ‘Not give up’ – (18.8) ‘He will see that they get justice, and quickly’ – quickly is relative to the unjust judge – he is unjust – God is not – God will be quicker

Comparison – not similarity but contrast (contradistinction) God is not similar, He is opposite – Our situation isn’t similar, Its opposite – if an unjust judge responds – how much quicker will God? -The widow has no advocate – we have Jesus – So don’ t give up!

Her plea (prayer) was driven from the heart – God looks at the heart –

Need drove her – prayers must be driven – we don’t say our prayers – we unleash them – driven by heart and Spirit

Distraction – God uses hard times to focus us – End time church for power – European vs Chinese church – Atheist states murdered & torture Christians – ‘Blood of martyrs is seed’ (Tertullian)

Prayer (plea) was short – ‘Help’ is full of passion – sincerity – aggression – vigor – We pray long to convince ourselves or others – they don’t convince God

She wanted justice – if you know you ask for what God wants – ask with faith, confidence & persistance – ‘When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures’ (James 4. 3) – pray ‘Your kingdom come!’

Prayer & faith – two pedals of bicycle – stop when easy – keep going when uphill – will he find faith?- Those who have faith will persist in prayer, those who persist in prayer wilI have faith
