Christians often start out in grace but end up in law. Grace is not just for salvation, it’s required for the entire Christian walk. When Jesus said ‘remain in me’ he meant that we should feed off who he is and what he did at the cross. Christian growth is by focus on Christ, not focus on obedience. Obedience flows naturally when we see Jesus.
Speakers notes follow –
Remain in Me
Luke 18. 9-14
Two to Temple to pray – opposites – Bishop n Barman – expect one
Pharisee – religious / tassels / teacher / wears his religion – Tax C – creeps in / informal / prefers unseen
Thanks God for obedience – disguised promoting of self – ‘I am humbled’
‘I fast’ – had list (doesn’t show heart) – Christians have lists too – don’t drink, smoke, dreads – do say ‘praise the Lord’, confess ‘saved,’ tithe
Thanks not like Tax C – but worse – pride blinds – Satan’s problem
Tax Collector – traitor / con man – walks in – not in religious clothes – gets looks – remains focused – after something – driven – tears / beating breast!
‘Mercy on me a sinner’ – sinners prayer – save me – sees his need for mercy
– Tax C justified – Pharisee not! (Barman – Bishop)
New Year – new beginnings – Tax C new beginning – Pharisee needed one too! Sometimes old believers need it too!
Pharisee been at it long – Tax C new to this
SA Minister – no joy/zeal – ‘I don’t want to be like that!’ – How about you?
Something hit me this week – after salvation most turn to law – become performance focused – guilty or prideful – condemn self or others – both are religion not gospel
Gal 3. 1-3 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?
Problem? Focus – on performance not Christ – grace is lost
Most think of Grace as forgiveness – Paul ‘grace is sufficient’ (strength) – ‘grace given me’ (revelation) – ‘spiritual gifts’ (charismata) Lit ‘grace endowments’ (Wimber ‘gracelets’) – grace is divine enabling – empowering – grace isn’t just for salvation!
Performer – trying to win favour instead of receiving it – Trying to build tower (Babel) – mans attempt – Cross God’s attempt – Religion vs Gospel (opposite)
Solution ‘Remain (abide) in Me’ (John 15. I-5)
“I am the true vine. ..Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
– focus on Christ is focus on grace – Christianity is a love response
How can we stay focused on Christ – remain in Him? About heart/mind direction – world looks away – we look to Him
Faith by hearing message / gospel – hearing / seeing same thing – what helps you see him? Revelation comes by Spirit presence / Bible meditation – not whipped up worship – that’s flesh -meditate-see-love-speak-sing-hear
Worship idea – BIOY helped reading – need food n drink!- phone / song set -30 min
Benefits – Presence – fullness – joy peace – prophetic / gifts – strength to minister – sunday worship – know songs – personal connection – bring anointing and skill
Come live in me all my life – take over, come breathe in me and I will rise on Eagles Wings
