The original languages of the Bible reveal a rich variety of expressions used to worship God. Some forms were celebratory and loud, others were quiet and intimate. The more expressions we have, the more conversant we are.

Can be in third or first person – first is more personal – intimate

– degrees of depth in Worship

Worship experience – historic church: hands at side, hymns – evangelical: choruses sometimes kneeling – pentecostal: hands raised on faces – creative mod: flags – distracting

Psalms biggest book – musical worship – language very expressive

Psalm 100.4 Thanksgiving (Towdah) Praise (Tehillah) Thanks (Yadah) Praise (Barak)

Towdah – thanks/praise extending hands adoringly – Thanks for things not yet received ‘I believe’

Psalm 50:14 – Sacrifice thank offerings (TOWDAH ) to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High

Halal – praise / make a show / rave / celebrate – unashamed voice ‘Hosanna!’ – Delivered Israel / rolled back the sea / destroyed Pharaoh / shook mountain’

Psalm 113:1 – Praise (HALAL) the Lord. Praise (HALAL) the Lord, you his servants; praise (Hahah the name of the Lord.

Tehillah – sing glorify in unashamed song (sing halal) – the kind of praise God dwells in

Psalm 22:3 – God is enthroned on the praises (TEHILLAH) of Israel

Yadah – throwing hands out – yad is hand – ‘Thank you! Praise you!’

Psalm 63:4 – I will praise (YADAH) you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.

Shabach – triumph / glory / shout / address aloud – indignant ‘you are mighty to save’

Psalm 145:4 – One generation commends (SHABACH) your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.

Barak – kneel or bow – expecting a blessing

Psalm 95:6 – O come let us worship and bow down; let us kneel (BARAK) before the Lord our maker.”

Zamar – pluck / touch strings – Palmos (GK) twang / pluck – sing / make melody in spiritual extacy – ‘| will pray / sing (palmos) with my spirit, I will also pray / sing (palmos) with my mind (1 Co 14.15) – Adlib

Psalm 108.2-3 Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise (ZAMAR) you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.

Shachah – worship – bow down – fall flat – fall on knees

Psalm 95:6 Come, let us worship (SHACHAH) and bow down, Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship  (SHACHAH) the LORD in holy array.

Proskuneo (Gk) – worship – fall flat – adore – reverence (from ‘to kiss’) – ‘God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship (proskuneo) in the Spirit and in truth.”(JN 4. 24) – kiss , adore in Spirit and truth

Intimacy curve – Enter courts praise – behind the veil – brides approach – awe/presence builds – beyond altar veil removed – signifies intimacy to come

You start exercising faith – once in his presence you know

Intimacy is fruitful – isn’t it?

Presence gives – joy, peace, revelation, sight, hearing, knowing, faith, bread to share – filled with his love, heart, vision, values, purposes

When I worship – I get messages – prophetic words

After intimacy, time to: Halal – shine, boast, celebrate – unashamed

Vineyard block of worship – entering intimacy takes time

Limited is expression is limiting – stretch it – more language – voice, hands, posture – extensions of heart – watch Italians

Habitual praise & worshiper – enters presence easily – spouse enthusiastic about you
