Moses – Seeker of God

(audio sermon by Gary Sampson)

God spoke to Moses face to face as one speaks to a friend. Moses knew Him as both Saviour and Friend. He sort after God as both. We should too.

Speakers notes follow –

Moses – Seeker of God

Context: Sinai – Moses down mountain – Israel worshipping calf – throws tablets – Levites kill 3000 – intercedes – blot out my name – go to the land, but I’m not going!

Exodus 33.7-17

Bad situation to good – not going to my presence will go – someone went after God – not going anywhere without God – made God number one – Moses grown: bush to Sinai – who are you to don’t leave us – see the picture of a God seeker

Tent of Meeting – anyone needing to hear God – meet the Lord – when Moses went – guiding cloud descended to entrance – door was shut – people worshipped at their tents – Do you have a special place to meet God?

God spoke to Moses face to face as with a friend – no wonder he wanted Presence – God as Saviour or Friend – seekers want intimacy

Joshua stayed – seeker in making – knew importance of knowing God – he took them into the land – not Moses

Conversation in the tent – part of it – show me your ways (like David) – remember its your people – submission + intercession

Who will go with me – Aaron sinned – Joshua hinted – My Presence will go – that’s all we need – Don’t need Aaron or Joshua

Presence provided water from rock, manner, ravens, open sea – coming to Mombasa, not knowing anyone, easy to worry like Israel – eyes wide open, but God did it – don’t look at what you lack, look at the God you have

We on a journey till Christ comes – don’t focus on lack, focus on him – act, work, but focus on him

You have a new challenge – new position – never done it before – Moses too – new challenge, same God – ‘I‘ve seen him turn a rod into a snake, but never seen him provide bread in a desert’ – remember he did it before

[Yes] If your Presence does not go with – what will distinguish us – as Israel conquered nations feared – Six Day War – people know God is with them

Presence distinguishes people of the Messiah too – but our war isn’t against flesh and blood

Exodus 33.18-20, 34.5-6, 29-35

Show me your glory (yourself) – Moses the seeker wants more – do you?

God shows himself in 34.5-6 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love…

Radiant face – Moses saw the glory – came down glowing with it!

Aaron and Israel ran away – Moses unaware of glow – eventually courage to approach – veil hid his face after – no veil in Presence added glow again

Paul on transitory glory – veil to stop Israel seeing glory fade – OC transitory – NC forever – veil removed (curtain torn) in Christ – we behold God’s glory – the Spirit is the Lord (2 Cor 3:7-18) – seekers carry the glory – Presence

Text describes the life of a God seeker – seeking God for the people – Moses sort God for mercy, for his commands, for his answers, for his direction – most of all for his Presence

We are seeking God in our church – his Presence and all that comes with that

We are all a different – in calling, gifting, availability – working people have little free time – some can seek God 5 hours a day, others 5 min a day – but lets all seek him for this church

As we seek his Presence goes with, we see his provision, glory and radiate it

Let’s be a Tent of Meeting – the community knows, this is where you come face to face with God
