Growing Through Doubt

John 20.19-31

Helps Thomas- why? Reject like Judas? Wants to believe!

A father who’s son committed suicide – prayed for him – where was God? Years later he has big questions – do you doubt?

God understands doubt – Your doubt

– ‘help my unbelief / some doubted – God used them- the best doubt!

Job vs friends – Friends certain but not suffering – Job ‘wronged me/ arrows in me / far from me’

Hard times / contradictions / opposite evidence

Preachers doubt – some pretend no doubts – wives know

Many Christians – public church image ‘I believe bro’ – Tassels on robes – public display – if honest about doubts – can deal with them

Sometimes we fool ourselves – What we believe vs think we believe – grow leg here – reaction?

Genuine beliefs revealed in daily actions – sky divers spin having fun – I couldnt – lack faith in parachute – but diving for him is daily action

Disciples feared storm – Jesus asleep – peaceful – his belief internalized

Why does God not remove doubt? – Just make us believe always?

Stepford wives – robots – obedient but no real love – not acting out of choice/heart – if no room for doubt – no room for faith

Trust in God is a growth thing – Job / Peter / Twelve grew

So don’t judge doubters – Jude 22 ‘Be merciful to those who doubt’

Thomas required to believe without seeing

Does it mean blind faith? Must we believe without reason?

If I say there’s aliens on mars – must you believe?

Jesus – ‘Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.’ (John 14.11)  ‘Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father'(John 10.37-38) ‘I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me’ (John 5.36) ‘Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name’ (John 20.30- 31)

Thomas knew Jesus, seen miracles, heard Jesus say he’d rise – now 12 said he did – he had reason to believe

Important decisions often require commitment without complete evidence (marriage) – if 80% certain – marry her – certainly impossible, faithfulness possible

No faith is as solid as a tested one – never trust a leader without a limp – Jacob struggled because he wrestled with God – so did Job and Peter

Apologetics group – Be real – share doubts – if you doubt, say so, persevere, study, ask questions, pray for answers – like with Job sometimes silence is there to mold us,
