(audio sermon by Gary Sampson)
Eagles are skilled at seeking, sensing and soaring on natural wind. God’s people need to be skilled at doing the same with spiritual wind.
Speakers notes follow –
Catching God’s Wind
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting … All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2.2-4)
You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3.7-8)
Spirit described as wind – probably best description – dove is gentleness + peace / wind is gentleness + great pover
So gentle people dont recognize – ‘do you feel Spirit’ ‘no’ ‘Feel anything?’ ‘Yes light’ ‘ Thats the Spirit’
Wind powerful too – Hurricanes in Carabean lifted 40ft containers over houses –
Conference SA – clattering – hear the sound but couldn’t tell where it was coming from – suddenly in front and moving past – rows of people + metal fold up chairs collapsing – power
Wind invisible – ‘do you see’ – effects on trees – Spirit invisible – see laugh, cry, shake, fall
Wind changes direction, twists, turns, drops, lifts – Spirit this way – different things all day
Word a rock – immovable, doesn’t budge – solid foundation – offers security – verifies what we hear/prophecy/experience
Spirit a wind – versatile/situational – Spirit gives personal application
Lease general (no pets) Caretaker personal (but I have gold fish) – personal touch helps – Word tells you God heals – Spirit tells you who God healing now – important!
We need be skilled in Word and Spirit – today about Spirit
Tudor Creek Fish eagles – crows hate – have a go – eagles glide, crows flap – had enough – two flaps to updraft – circles, feels, seeks – keeps climbing – crows earth bound – can’t breathe at height?
“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40.31)
Eagles skilled at sensing updraft – surf it – we need skill with wind
Some of you used to catching wind in worship – I see it – you ideling along – suddenly you turbo charged – sing with gusto – gliding with God
Shouldn’t just be in worship – moment walk in door – in sermon, tea, laying hands – sense what God’s doing
What we need to do to become skilled?
First – desire, passion, hunger for his presence – seeing it in others – desperate situation – reminding ourselves of past
Joyce: seek God don’t seek the gifts – his presence brings all
Actively seeking God’s presence at home – He comes to those that desire him – seeking shows desire
Seeking God prepares – having prayed your expectation raised – expecting as you walk in door – you’Il ask people ‘are you ready?’ What an atmosphere!
Walked in a church and gone ‘0h’ because you felt his presence?
Vineyard in Kansas – presence in service – talking to a lady in bookshop – didn’t want her to stop
Would you like visitors to feel God’s presence as they enter?
We may not experience from moment we walk in door, but should seek his presence from that moment – Like eagles should put our wings out – feel, sense, ask – where is the wind?
Means being open to interruption – do you mind – we want that!
Toronto Refreshing – sermons + worship interrupted – wind came, shaking, laughing, falling, like drunks
Need his wind in everything – difference between prayer that has wind and one that doesn’t? Prayer without wind is like flat beer – no life / with wind it has zip – its eye opening – wow!
Need wind in our planning – all have gifts/skills – like sailboats (Bill Johnson) – different shapes/colours – admire: guitar playing, eloquence, story-telling, affinity with kids, organization of camp – but sailboats not for admiring – to be spiritually effective they need wind
Whether you preach, lead worship, homegroup, kids – need catch wind – what is God saying, doing – determines, message, activity, songs
Will you join me in seeking God for his wind?
